CHARACTER
Name: Finn Mertens
Canon: Adventure Time
Age: 13
Specialty: Astral Projection
Position: Junior Camper
Personality: If one were to describe Finn in one word it would be heroic. In another? Optimistic. Perhaps owing to his young age, he's got an excitable personality that knows no bounds, and despite his age, he's never easily discouraged. He will do whatever he can to be there to help someone who needs it- it doesn't matter who it is, or what the circumstance might be. If he's needed, he's going to do his best to be there for you. In short, Finn is just like any other kid his age- playful, mischievousness, fun, and surprisingly innocent. Just about everything about him consists of searching for the silver lining in everything. What kind of an adventure would life be if you were down in the dumps about everything anyway?
Behind Finn's happy exterior are a few deeper traits that most wouldn't usually see just scratching the surface. Growing up, he was the one who had to be the rock for everyone else, that one person people could look up to in a time of need. His whole life has consisted of being brave for others, but this never really gave him a chance to be brave for himself. He's had to learn that when life gets tough, you get tougher.
On top of this, Finn is actually deeply emotional about the things he cares about. His friends, his family- he'd be willing to risk his life for them if it came right down to it. Of course, this sometimes leads to Finn letting things he has no business worrying about get to him. He is a kid after all, but he feels responsibility for those he's close to regardless. He's also spontaneous- not only in personality, but in the things he does. If his emotions are high, he'll throw himself right into a situation without a second thought. Action first, consequences later has seemed to be his motto time and time again, sometimes leading to some sticky situations. Don’t let his age fool you though- he’s a lot tougher than he looks. He’s pretty handy with a sword in combat, and has a shockingly high tolerance for pain.
Interesting fact about Finn- he has an oddly wonderful singing voice, owing to the fact that he- apparently- swallowed a small computer at some point in his life. He can sing, and he can change the way his voice sounds to almost anything he wants. He’s normally pretty chill about singing in front of others- unless it’s something embarrassing of course, like a lullaby.
Another thing about him is, in spite of himself and problems concerning it in the past, Finn is a hopeless romantic. He's susceptible to puppy crushes, ones that tend never to be mutual concerning the person he's crushing on. This was quite the ordeal for him a long time concerning Princess Bubblegum, who he often works for as a knight of sorts. When it comes to relationships, he doesn't know what he's doing- so it turns out being awkward and quite a mess for everyone involved. It doesn't seem to be something he can help though.
Finn is also susceptible to anger- if something bad happens or doesn't go as planned he can tend to lose himself to his anger, lashing out in unpredictable ways, though he'd never intentionally hurt someone. (Unless you know- you're a bad guy donkus who deserves it.)
All in all though, he's really a nice kid. If anything he really does mean well- even if things don't turn out the way he expected most of the time. He’s loyal, kind, and trust worthy, and he’s always gonna have your back no matter what. If you’ve made friends with Finn, you’ve made a friend for life.
AU History: In this AU, Finn is going to be the same age as he is in canon: 13. Though his story might seem different, it’s more canon than you might think.
Meet Finn Mertens. A young boy growing up on a farm located somewhere in the deep south, Alabama more likely than not. He and his family- consisting of mom, dad, infant sibling, donkey Bartram, and dog Jake- live just outside of a town that’s not much bigger than the amount of land their house and entire farm sits on. They don’t make a whole lot, just enough to live off of, but it’s a comfortable, humble life- and Finn is just fine with the way things are.
But there’s a…small problem. Two problems actually, and they’re actually not that small at all.
The first being the gang of bullies that rules the town- and by extension- the Merten’s farm: The Destiny Gang. They rule by force and keep their status through fear and abuse, and often they seem to enjoy bullying Finn’s family most of all, his dad in particular. Sometimes having to stoop to loaning items and things to have enough money to live off of, his father got in a lot of trouble with the gang for not ‘paying up’ on time. It’s one of Finn’s most vivid memories as a child- and at a young age, this is what instilled the desire to protect others into him. The strong urge to be something that everyone else was afraid to step up to.
A hero.
The second problem? …Finn discovered not long past the age of being able to actually remember things that he was…not like other kids. Not by a long shot. He had…dreams. Dreams are a common thing, right? …Well not for Finn. For Finn- dreams were like entering an entirely new world. Where his dog Jake could talk- ..where most of the animals could talk- and he was the world’s hero. Everybody looks up to him in his dreams, and it’s his job to protect Princesses and save entire kingdoms from the forces of evil. Just dreams. But…the older Finn got, the more vivid those dreams became. ..As if….they were real. It felt to him as if he were seeing into the minds of other people at times, instead of his own.
Soon they became more than dreams. It became his other life- ..a projection of a world he could escape to when he slept. Of course- the older Finn got, the stronger this world became. He could call upon it at any time he wished, he didn’t need to be asleep to bring back the images. …that’s when his family began to notice something was wrong. Their son going into these…strange trances, his eyes staring at nothing in particular for undetermined amounts of time- before he’d snap back to reality, and try to act as if nothing happened. But it wasn’t something they could ignore, and it worried them.
In the area Finn lived, most of the people were deeply rooted in present times- believing that things such as this were the works of witchcraft. Beginning to fear for Finn’s safety, his parents would try to occupy him around the home, trying their best to keep him away from town as much as possible, lest he slip into one of his unpredictable trances. But keeping Finn out of town was like trying to keep a fish out of water- and it wasn’t long before the townsfolk noticed Finn’s strange ways. Some of them ignored it, some of them passed it off as some childish phase. …Most however? They secretly feared and despised the boy for his strange actions.
The Destiny Gang have noticed as well- but innocent Finn is oblivious to all at the beginning, starting to really invest his time into his trips into his mind. …he began to believe that these weren’t just dreams, but actual places- or if not, a ghost of something that existed at one time…or has yet to exist. Either way, it’s something he cannot explain. ..Was the boy going crazy? …Was it just childish tendencies that prompted him to murmur to his dog Jake, as if he expected to have the dog speak and respond? Perhaps- but somehow Finn believed it to be something more. …Like…a power.
So once upon a time, Finn’s family begins having trouble with the Destiny Gang again- this time debts to be payed, as usual. Only- they don’t have the money to pay them back. ..at all. And selling the house isn’t exactly an option- so Finn’s mother orders him to take Bartram to town to be sold. Finn is reluctant, seeing as Bartram has been in the family since he can remember- but knowing this is necessary, he leaves for town with a heavy heart. He dreads trips to town anymore, considering how people treat him. Keeping Jake close at his side is a comfort though. The dog quickly became his only true best friend, over the years.
Of course, as expected, nobody wants the donkey. It’s hard to say if it’s because they just DON’T want him, or because Finn’s the one selling him. Either way he’s persistent and optimistic as can be, even when everybody turns him down. No matter- he’d get money to pay back the destiny gang somehow. Being the eldest, he knew it was his responsibility to take care of everyone, especially if his parents needed the help.
Disgruntled, but not defeated, Finn headed home- …only to be alerted by smoke rising over the hillside. When he reached the farm, everything was chaos. His house on fire, and half of the field already smoldering ash by the time he’d reached it. What’s worse? His parents are nowhere in sight, even as the roof of the burning house caves in before he can get down the hill. Who else is there but the Destiny Gang, their leader turning on Finn at once. You’re a devil child, a threat to our society! So apparently, in his messed up reasoning, he believed the only way to drive Finn- and possibly his family- away, was by destroying what little they had to their name. This becomes a bit of a turning point in Finn’s history- when he takes matters into his own hands, literally this time.
Even at just thirteen, Finn really packed a punch, being as enraged and upset as he was by what the gang had done. And as much of a fury as he was thrown into by this, the latter two lackeys beneath the leader almost immediately fled to get away from Finn, the crazy Merten’s kid who has freaky psychic powers that nobody can explain. He eventually managed to drive the leader off as well, with all he’s ever known crumbling all around him.
But luck smiled upon Finn, if only briefly. It turned out that his parents made it out of their home alive- shaken, but uninjured. …But now they had nothing, absolutely nothing to their name. No home, no farm- nothing but each other and the clothes on their backs. They would have to move, and live with other parts of the family until something could be figured out. As they tried to discuss this with their son though, Finn suddenly wouldn’t have it. Afraid that his powers would cause his parents to be in even more danger, considering how fearful of the unknown people are, he just didn’t want to take any more chances.
During his time learning more about his powers, Finn had caught wind of a place… a camp of sorts where children like him could go to learn about how to properly control their gifts, so that they wouldn’t have to be something to be feared. Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp. The boy made the decision right then and there, leaving his parents with Bartram to carry them safely to the nearest town, to await family members to pick them up. He would meet them, Bartram, and Jake at their new home later. He had a camp to go to. Still, things aren’t as bad as they seem. His family still had somewhere to go at least- and he would have somewhere to return to, once camp ended.
He just hopes he’ll have a bit more control over his strange powers, by then
Brain World: Finn’s brain world is very open, and bright. Immediately you will see what appears to be a massive clearing surrounded by a forest with foliage so thick that you’d think the sunlight wouldn’t be able to filter through- and yet it does, spotting everything with dazzling patches of light, adding warmth and closeness to the area. In the very center of the clearing is the biggest tree you’ve ever seen. It’s mighty branches reach high into the sky, farther than can be seen by the naked eye. And it’s not just any tree.
It’s a treehouse.
Upon entering it’s clear that it’s much larger on the inside than it is on the outside. In fact it’s enormous- the treehouse having several levels that wind up in spirals up the trunk of the tree, far up into the gnarled branches that reach out in all directions. There are no roofs- the leaves and branches themselves provide enough cover, still letting those ever present streams of light shine through. On each floor there are piles of what appear to be treasure- sometimes scattered haphazardly, sometimes pushed into heaping piles in the corners. The treasure itself varies between gold, to jewels- jewelry to weapons, and even books of all sorts of sizes and color.
Though almost everything is bright, the treehouse does have its dark spots, some places exceedingly so. If you’ll pay attention, you might spot a pair of glistening rubies lying in a pile of gold. …But those aren’t rubies, they’re eyes. Eyes of Finn’s censors- golem like creatures that appear to be made of quartz. Their bodies are almost iridescent, blending with the shadows, ever changing color- but they’re large, with massive arms and rocky bodies, fingers curled in that boast jagged pieces of gems that form wicked claws. Same goes for their teeth. Figments take the appearance of lean fox-like creatures, who for some reason are pure white with sharp, black eyes. Cobwebs are mostly in the darkest of places in the treehouse, which leads you to the next level-
Up onto the next level of the treehouse- here’s where most of Finn’s emotional baggage lies. It’s mostly in duffles, and a few handbags here or there- but all around where the baggage sits are sharp beams of light, that almost seem to cut off access to it. The light is bright, as if it would burn you to touch it- surely Finn’s optimism shining through like a beacon, fighting to hide the baggage. It’s not there, really. You’re just imagining it…right?
Either way, if you turn you’ll notice a knot in the trunk of the tree, leading way to a gaping hole. There’s a ladder there- and it leads straight up the center of the trunk, which appears to be hollow here. It leads right up to a bedroom. It’s a bit cluttered and everything seems to be shoved together, but it’s homey at best, and exactly where you think a child his age would stay most of the time.
Finn is seen as his normal self, mostly- except he no longer wears his hat, and lets his blonde hair flow freely, and while he doesn’t wear his backpack, it always seems to be near him…somewhere, no matter where he is. Ready for him at a moment’s notice, if needed.

Sample 2: Despite recent setbacks (though setbacks, surely, are an understatement), Finn was excited about camp. Very excited actually. So excited he could barely think about anything else, even as he got what was left of his belongings together all packed up in his backpack and ready to go. By now his parents were already gone, off to meet those relatives that promised to pick them up in due time.
Smiling to himself he sighed, pulling down his hat a little, the very one his mother had made- just for him. “Well….this is just gonna be another adventure for me.” He said to himself, silently wishing Jake was there. Dog’s couldn’t go to camp though- but he knew his dog, best friend…heck, brother might as well say, well. He’d be waiting for him when camp was over, waiting for the boy to tell him all about the new friends he’d made, and the new powers he’d discovered.
Finn knew he’d be at home here. Somehow- he just had that feeling. ..Perhaps it was the crazy talking, but he couldn’t help but be optimistic. His parents would be proud of him for this. Taking charge- taking his future into his own hands. Perhaps here, he’s understand his psychic ability. He’d finally get answers as to…why he can go into these strange trances, and travel to places that seem to exist, but don’t. ….Or perhaps they do? ..Either way-
..Well.
